The belt was squealing during high-RPM gear changes, so I replaced it.

Since the air cleaner box had to come off, I also replaced the filter – it was quite dirty.

Turn the tensioner’s 24mm bolt clockwise and it comes off easily.

Thread it through the gap and route it as before. Jet black, feels good. The grease inside the tensioner shaft had hardened, so I scraped it out and injected new grease.

The 996 really has excellent serviceability.
