S2000 EPS Error

Restoration(e

Day after the typhoon, thinking I’d get some fresh air, picked up the S2000 stored in the machine parking. Swapped with DB8, exited the garage and turned right… at that moment, oh such heavy steering. Heavy enough I thought I’d crash into the building across the street.

Looking at the meter, the EPS warning light was on. Though over 20 years old, only about 60,000km mileage…

S2000 is also at a stage requiring commitment (well, there was a time when DC2 and S2000 were lined up together at dealers, so even though design generations differ, it’s natural).

As vehicle speed drops, steering becomes unbelievably heavy, so fearing red lights, managed to get it into the garage. Decided to try replacing the steering torque sensor I’d stocked when purchasing.

First remove air cleaner box – easy to complete. Can access the torque sensor under the air cleaner box, but even after disconnecting from steering gearbox, shaft joint blocks extraction…

Loosen upper and lower joint bolts, remove bolts, and joint can move fully to steering side, successfully extracted. Note: must loosen bolts until removed or it won’t move. Before extracting torque sensor, mark reference point with masking tape, then pull to extract.

New torque center had reference point marked on shaft.

Inserting new torque sensor – sounds simple but was difficult. Must precisely match angle or won’t go in, so at the moment I got it in well, lightly tightened upper and lower bolts and gradually fitted while maintaining horizontal.

Fitted torque sensor, replaced air cleaner, reset EPS. But even after reset, warning light didn’t respond with reset completion… Started engine but still no good, still heavy steering.

Power steering ECU is consultation part from early to final models unavailable, Yahoo auctions full of suspicious listings (listed repeatedly with bids every time…) too scary.

Removed power steering ECU and shipped to repair shop. Will it be fixed…?
